South County Strings Program
Youth Music Monterey's South County Strings program involves formal partnerships between YMM and South County school districts, including Monterey County Home Charter School in Salinas, San Antonio Union School in Lockwood, and Bradley Union School in Bradley. A team of instructors provide violin, viola, and cello instruction in private or group lessons either during the school day or immediately following. Students are not charged for the lessons. YMM and the schools share the cost of the instructors' salaries. YMM provides students with instruments for a modest monthly rental cost.
Teaching Opportunities
South County Strings of Youth Music Monterey is looking for experienced String Teachers for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.
The String teacher’s main objective is to teach technique, rhythm and intonation on a string instrument in beginning to intermediate level classes at elementary and/or middle school. In support of this, he/she:
- Teaches instrumental music at a site location;
- Mentors the students side-by-side at rehearsals;
- Increases student’s musicianship skills, ensemble skills and instrument competency;
- Selects repertoire that increases the awareness and appreciation of many types of music;
- Works with the other string teachers to create an overall improved string ensemble;
- Assists in the organizing and managing non-instructional functions (e.g., inventory, budgeting, scheduling classes, grading, organizing parent volunteers for performances & events)
- Programs a concert
- Demonstrates professional behavior
- Uses music to create an awareness and value to the students and families in the community served
- Maintains the YMM mission “to build the next generation of musicians and music lovers”
Music classes held on school sites in South County during the school day, twice a week.
