Youth Music Monterey’s South County Strings program brings free string instruction and low-cost rental instruments to students in south Monterey County. Through partnerships with the local school districts in these rural South Monterey Communities, YMM provides students in grades 3-8 the ability to study cello, viola and violin in areas where music education and performance opportunities are sparse or nonexistent. Students receive a minimum of two hours instruction at beginning and intermediate levels with skilled string instructors, and give on-site performances for their peers, perform at community events and in retirement homes and hospitals. Students also receive free or subsidized tickets to concerts throughout Monterey County, and visiting musicians, such as the YMMC Chamber Players, who visit the school sites and perform for, and work with the young string students. We are very proud of our student musicians in south Monterey County. Please consider making a donation to help bring music to more kids in 2013!

South County Needs Strings: “It is especially important to provide opportunities for music exposure, appreciation and performance in underserved communities.”

Youth Music Monterey County's South County Strings program involves formal partnerships between YMMC and South County school districts, including San Lucas Union School, San Antonio Union School, San Ardo Union School, and Bradley Union School. A team of music instructors provide violin, viola, and cello instruction in group lessons during the school day. Students are not charged for the lessons and YMMC provides students with instruments for a modest monthly rental cost. Music classes begin in September and run throughout the school year through June.
