The Youth and Honors Orchestras of Youth Music Monterey and Conductor John Larry Granger Present: “Making Overtures”
Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Sunset Center, San Carlos Street at Ninth Avenue, Carmel (doors open at 1:30 pm)
with special guests Orchestra in the Schools
and featuring the 2009-10 Concerto Competition Winner, Perry Choi
performing the first movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major.
A junior and high honor student at York School, Perry Choi has been a member of Youth Music Monterey for the past four years and currently is the principal clarinetist. He began playing music at the age of 6 first on the piano followed by the clarinet at age 10. Aside from playing music, he also enjoys composing and listening to music and playing on his School Varsity golf team. He excels in his academic subjects, including math, and recently placed 2nd in Calculus at the Monterey County Mathletics Competition. Perry has had music lessons with Erica Horn, Theresa Hruby-Purcell, Frank Renk, Mark Brandenburg, Ginger Barnetson, Kim Cole Luevano, and Luis Baez and participated in master classes with Jerome Simas and Daniel Gilbert. He plans on majoring in music in college, along with another major in Biology, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering. His proudest musical achievement has been the creation of Keeping Music Alive, a program which allows talented high school musicians to provide, for free, a music program for an elementary school that does not currently have one. Although it's been rough beginnings due to a lack of instruments, those that have gotten instruments are learning quickly, and he is proud to be a part of that child's learning.
