About the Event

A native of Edinburg, Tx, double bassist Andres Vela received his Bachelors of Music (Double Bass Performance) from the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley, where he was a student of Dr. George Amorim. He is currently pursuing a Masters Degree of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas where he is a student of Timothy Pitts.

As a solo and orchestral player, he has collected many accolades. As a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, he performed at Carnegie Hall and went on tour in China under Maestro Charles Dutoit in 2015. He has also Participated in the Festival Institute at Round Top, Classical Music Institute ( San Antonio), Aruba Symphony Festival, Suoni dal Golfo Music Festival (Lerici, Italy), Texas Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and Tanglewood Music Festival. Solo awards include an honorable mention in the American String Teachers Association Solo Competition, winner of the UTRGV concerto competition, first prize at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition as part of the Texas Music Festival,

Semi-Finalist in both the Houston Symphony Ima Hogg and International Society of Bassists Solo Competitions, Finalist in the Rice Shepherd School of Music Concerto Competition, and was most recently a Semi-Finalist in the 24th Annual Sphinx Competition.
