    Join a community devoted to building the next generation through music! The Angel Network serves student musicians from over 30 schools spanning from Salinas and South County to the Monterey Peninsula. Each year, up to 300 students learn to collaborate and gain confidence while improving their instrumental playing skills. Angels make it possible for YMMC to accept all qualified students regardless of their ability to pay. Covering about a third of the cost of instruction for YMMC students, the Angel Network keeps tuition affordable by bridging the gap between student fees and the cost of the program. With your annual contribution, you help ensure students can experience the powerful instruction provided in the Junior Youth and Honors Orchestras, Chamber Ensembles, and South County Strings.   • Miriam Oddie | Youth Music Monterey

    Artistic Staff Miriam Oddie South County Strings Director Acclaimed as both a teacher and a performer, native New Zealander Miriam Oddie is devoted to inspiring a love of music in audiences and students. She has performed with numerous orchestras such as the Abilene Philharmonic, the Midland Odessa Symphony and Chorale, and the Dallas Bach Society. Simultaneously, she has taught numerous violin and viola students in the Lewisville, TX school district and also maintained a private studio. Miriam has participated in numerous music festivals, including the Eastern Music Festival, the Castleman Quartet Program, and the Aspen Music Festival. In summer 2019, she was honored to be a guest artist at the Saarburg International Music Festival in Saarburg, Germany. Miriam attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music for her undergraduate degree, studying with violists John Graham and Carol Rodland. She went to the University of North Texas to pursue her Masters degree, studying with renowned violist and pedagogue Susan Dubois. While at UNT, she served as the principal violist of the university symphony and also began exploring a passion for baroque music as a member of the UNT Baroque Orchestra. When not teaching or performing, Miriam is probably reading, running, or baking! Back to Staff

  • Chamber Players | Youth Music Monterey

    Chamber Players The 2019-2020 Chamber Players. The Chamber Players program was designed to enhance the orchestras' program and seeks to provide a professional level of training and performance for students. The Chamber Players' experience includes mentorship through multiple annual master classes with world-class artists. Past artists have included the Juilliard String Quartet and Van Cliburn Gold Medalist and international piano soloist Jon Nakamatsu. Through multiple annual performances throughout the season, in retirement communities, schools, South County Strings programs, and in an annual concert benefiting all YMMC programs, the Chamber Players act as ambassadors for youth and music in our community. Members are selected by audition. The program is open to any instrumentalist within our orchestra program, including pianists; as with all the YMMC small ensembles, there is no additional tuition to participate.   • Brass Ensemble | Youth Music Monterey

    Brass Ensemble The 2019-2020 Brass Ensemble. The YMMC Brass Ensemble, directed by Executive Director and Brass Director Suzanne Mudge , offers a great opportunity for its members to experience personal growth and increased confidence. The ensemble plays varied repertoire of many genres spanning four centuries in several configurations of 3-8 players. Playing in small chamber groups develops focus, creativity, and discipline. while building problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills. These characteristics grow a confident child and accomplished performer, and translate to excellent preparation for the challenges of college, career, and life. The YMMC Brass Ensemble actively seeks collaborations and performing opportunities, making connections with our community, and educating and engaging new audiences. We have performed for assisted living communities across the Monterey Peninsula, the Tor House Garden Party, the Carmel Public Library Foundation, and for Carmel Bach Festival off-season events such as Cottages and Gardens and Season previews. Members have also been invited to perform with the Tower Brass during the Bach Festival in July. We host guest artists and clinicians from the brass world, learning from them and increasing the appreciation and joy of being a brass player. All brass students enrolled in YMMC orchestras are eligible – and encouraged – to participate in the Brass Ensemble. There is no additional fee for participation.     Paoletti Orchestra in the Schools Fund Honoring Jim Paoletti's Legacy through Music Your gift supports Orchestra in the Schools , the program Jim Paoletti cultivated to bring the joy of musical expression to all Monterey County students by making music accessible, regardless of circumstances. Jim's Legacy Jim Paoletti championed Orchestra in the Schools (OITS) to provide opportunities for young musicians to build confidence through being part of an orchestra and producing music together. He believed that learning an instrument helped students become responsible adults who appreciate artistic beauty. Orchestra in the Schools has introduced countless students to the joy, discipline, and community of making music together. This fund ensures his legacy continues for generations to come.
