Youth Music Monterey County supports two orchestras, a chamber music program, a brass ensemble, a woodwind ensemble, and in-school teaching and performance opportunities. Our Junior Youth and Honors Orchestras are led by conductor Maestro Danko Druško and feature approximately 100 student musicians. Thank you to all of our YMMC students, families, staff, & volunteers for a great 2024-2025 season. Youth Music Monterey County and its programs; Honors & Junior Youth Orchestras, Brass-Wind-Strings Ensembles, Orchestra in the Schools, and South County Strings are only possible with your support and commitment to our students and music. Tuition Assistance Tuition Assistance Form Tuition Costs Youth Music Monterey strives to keep our programs accessible to all students in our community. We work hard to raise funds and write grants to offset the costs of tuition for all students. Because every student's tuition in YMMC is subsidized, we ask that every family commit to six volunteer duties to help keep our costs low. Junior Youth and Honors Orchestra Payment Options include: One-time ($1,500 due by September 1) Three payments of $500 are due by 9/1, 12/1, and 3/15 Monthly ($150/10 months, first payment due by September 1) Tuition and/or Lesson assistance available Orchestra In The Schools Payment options include: One-time ($750 due by September 1) Tuition and/or Lesson assistance available Tuition Assistance Tuition assistance may be available to students who demonstrate financial need. To be considered, you must complete the tuition assistance form , and submit a copy of your most recent tax return. If you are opting to apply for tuition assistance rather than submitting a payment on September 1st, your registration and tuition assistance application must be completed and received in the YMMC office by September 1st. Private Lesson Assistance Private lessons are an essential tool for our students. We may have additional funding available to subsidize the costs of private lessons for students who need financial help. Only students who qualify for tuition assistance are eligible to apply for lesson assistance. Please see our Private Lesson Assistance Application for complete details. Funding varies from year to year and is not guaranteed. Multi-Student Discount Families with more than one child enrolled in our program will receive a multi-student discount of an additional $100 off per student. i.e. student one $1500, student two $1400, student three $1300 etc Payment Plans We offer three payment options: full year, per concert (3 payments), per month (10 payments). Payments are always due at the beginning of the pay period that you have selected. The first payment (or completed financial assistance application with tax returns) is due by the third rehearsal of the season. A student whose tuition payments are not current may be disqualified from performing. If at a later point during the year you would like to request Tuition Assistance, please visit this page . Chamber Groups YMMC offers several chamber ensembles to allow our students additional opportunities. We currently offer Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, and a mixed instrument ensemble The Chamber Players. The costs of these programs are covered in tuition, and are offered to our students at no additional expense. Please see the Parent/Student Guide or contact the office for more details. Instrument Rentals YMMC is also able to offer instrument rentals to our students. Rentals are $20 per month and also require a $50 refundable deposit. Students asked to use an auxiliary instruments (A & Eb clarinets, piccolo, english horn, etc.) in a YMMC concert may borrow the instrument without a rental fee; however, a refundable deposit is still required. Orchestra In The Schools OITS Handbook Calendar Pay Tuition Music Tuition Assistance Absence Form REGISTER HERE The 2019-2020 Chamber Players. REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN JOIN US NEXT SEASON Since 1988 Orchestra in the Schools (OITS) offers music instruction for beginners to intermediate levels, be part of an orchestra and perform with students from other schools. No experience is needed . This can be a student’s first musical experience. No auditions are necessary. Orchestra in the Schools is an affordable, after-school music education program. Available to students in grades 3-8 attending Charter, Public, Private and Home-School Younger students may be accepted with approval from the Artistic Director. Students will learn to play an orchestral instrument, read music, rehearse, and perform with other young people from Monterey County. Each student gets a minimum of 27 two-hour sessions throughout the school year Two concerts are planned, one in December and one in May. Small group lessons from highly qualified Instructors teaching: Strings - Violin, Viola and Cello (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or 4/4 sizes) Double Bass - (1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 sizes) Woodwinds - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone Brass - Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba Percussion - Snare Drum, Drum Pad, Bells, Bass Drum Dates/Times & Locations Classes are from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Mondays at the International School Monterey (ISM) Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Violin, and Viola. Tuesdays at Monterey Bay Charter School (MBCS) Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Violin, and Viola. Thursdays at All Saints Day School (ASDS) Violin and Viola. Junior Youth & Honors Orchestras Audition Information Register Tuition and Financial Aid The 2019-2020 Honors Orchestra, with conductor Danko Druško. Youth Music Monterey County’s Honors Orchestra & Junior Youth Orchestra provides students an exceptional opportunity to study and perform the masterpieces of symphonic literature with other young musicians from across Monterey County. This experience helps them develop knowledge of classical repertoire, as well as technical and artistic skill. Featuring talented young musicians from over 30 local schools across Monterey County, YMMC orchestras present three acclaimed symphonic concerts at Sunset Center each year. Our program includes weekly rehearsals with our conductor, sectional coachings, and masterclasses with guest artists. In addition, students enrolled in our orchestras may choose to participate in one or more of our three chamber ensembles at no additional cost. These include the Chamber Players , the Brass Ensemble , and the Woodwind Ensemble . Junior Youth Orchestra The Junior Youth Orchestra (Young Intermediate Level Repertoire) includes students age 7 and up and rehearses on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at Hidden Valley Music Seminars. A yearly Concerto Competition is also open to all students. Honors Orchestra Our Honors Orchestra (Young Advanced Level Repertoire) plays full symphonic scores and is open to students up to the age of 20. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Hidden Valley Music Seminars. Students may compete in the yearly Honors Orchestra Concerto Competition in order to perform their piece in the next concert season. Auditions It's never too late to join YMMC! Our orchestras are a great opportunity for young musicians to receive the high-caliber training they need for success in school music, college, and their future careers. Youth Music Monterey County was established as a 501(c)(3) organization on May 18, 1988, with the merger of two programs: the Youth Orchestra of Monterey County (est. 1981) and Summer Music Monterey (est. 1965). Chamber Music Three chamber music programs provide Honors Orchestra musicians opportunities to advocate for the arts and give back to the local community through public performances representing YMMC. Accessible and Essential Music YMMC’s South County Strings Program involves formal partnerships between YMMC and South County school districts, including Soledad Union School District, San Antonio Union School in Lockwood, and Bradley Union School in Bradley. A team of instructors provides free violin, viola, and cello instruction in group lessons during the school day to students in grades 3-8 living in rural south Monterey County. Artistic Staff Suzanne Mudge Brass Ensemble Director Suzanne Mudge has coached the YMMC Brass Ensemble since 2015, and served as Executive Director in 2019-2020 and has been a performer at the CBF for over 30 years. In addition to playing trombone and sackbut in the festival orchestra and directing Tower Music and community outreach concerts, Sue creates and scripts the The Epic Adventures of Leonard and Rasmus, a family series of interactive and educational concerts. Sue has been an in-demand professional musician and highly regarded educator and brings both of those professions to her new role in arts administration. Prior to her move to Carmel, she taught at Central Oregon Community College, directed the band program at The Seven Peaks School in Bend, Oregon, had a private teaching studio, and performed with the Central Oregon Symphony, the Eugene Symphony, and the Bend Brass Quintet. Her trombone and trumpet students placed consistently in the top 5 at the Oregon State Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Prior to her move to Bend, Sue was an active freelance musician and music educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. She performed with the Women’s Philharmonic in San Francisco, and the symphonies in Modesto, Fremont, Marin, Berkeley, and San Jose. She recorded numerous CD’s at Skywalker Ranch Sue was also the Band Director at Lowell HS in San Francisco. Sue was raised in Laguna Beach. She has a B.M from The University of The Pacific Conservatory of Music, a M.M. from the University of Arizona, and a teaching credential from Notre Dame de Namur University. She has a passion for film music, animals, California native trees and plants, the beach, bicycling, math history, cooking, and wine. And she’s still playing the trombone! Back to Staff
- Aleksey Klyushnik | Youth Music Monterey
Artistic Staff Aleksey Klyushnik Chamber Players Aleksey Klyushnik holds the Master of Music degree from Yale University and both the Bachelor of Music degree and the Artist Diploma from Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. Aleksey has always had great passion for chamber music. He has performed in the most elaborate instrumentation ensembles where he played music ranging from medieval to newly composed works. As a chamber musician he collaborated with many top artists. Aleksey was invited to Chamber Music Northwest for two consecutive summers as Protégé Project fellow. Also, Aleksey had been a member of the Maestro Chamber Music Academy in Santa Monica, and participated in the Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival. As an orchestral musician Aleksey participated in Pacific, Verbier and Lucerne music festivals performing in venues throughout Europe, US and Japan. Aleksey has collaborated with many great conductors, some of which include Pierre Boulez, Valeriy Gergiev, Charles Dutoit, Andrew Davis, Mikhail Pletnev, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Zubin Mehta. Aleksey has performed regularly with several orchestras in Southern California, including San Diego Symphony, Opera Pacific Orchestra and Long Beach Symphony. Currently he serves as Assistant Principal Bass with Santa Cruz and Stockton Symphonies and has played with multiple ensembles and orchestras in the Bay Area and Central California including San Francisco Symphony and Opera. In addition to his performance career Aleksey is a dedicated teacher and maintains a private studio of over 20 cello and double bass students. Back to Staff
- Alyze Rabideau | Youth Music Monterey
Alyze Rabideau South County Strings Director Alyze Rabideau received a Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Composition from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. During her time at the Blair School of Music, she studied violin with Jessica Blackwell, percussion with Ji-Hye Jung and Kwame Ahima, and composition with Michael Slayton and Michael Alec Rose. Alyze has also worked with distinguished composers including Joan Tower, Jack Stamp, Elliot Schwartz, and Elizabeth Austin. Her music has been performed throughout the United States as well as in Austria, Italy, France, Nepal, Kenya, and Spain. Prior to her current role as the South County Strings Director with Youth Music Monterey, Alyze taught English in Benin, West Africa as a member of the United States Peace Corps. In addition to teaching in the classroom, she created after school music clubs at multiple schools and a national summer camp for English and gender equality, Camp SPEAK. Before her move to Benin, Alyze worked at the W.O. Smith Music School, where she taught private lessons on violin, percussion, and saxophone and was the conductor for the StringSmiths String Orchestra. She also served as concertmaster for the W. O. Smith Faculty Orchestra. Currently, Alyze teaches violin and music theory at Monterey County Home Charter School. She enjoys cooking, hiking, and playing music with her four siblings, all of whom are string musicians. Back to Staff
